Federal Government Funding Sources

Grants.gov
http://www.grants.gov/
Grants.gov is the federal portal for many federal government grant programs. From the home page, click on the “Grant Search” on the right side of the page to start your search, which you can do by keyword or agency.

The Federal Register (FR)
http://www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/index.html
The Federal Register is the government daily newspaper. It reports major federal government activities, including newly approved grant programs. In theory, all new grant announcements should appear in Grants.gov, but in practice it doesn’t happen. Both funding sources must be monitored to get a comprehensive view of federal grant programs. Enter your key words in the search engine. You can also have the table of contents sent directly to your email (see under “Other Services”.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA)
http://www.cfda.gov/
The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) is a secondary information source for federal grants. It is an electronic “Christmas Wish Book” of government grant options. Experienced grantseekers find four browsers particularly useful: agency program index, which lists grant opportunities by agency name; applicant eligibility index, which categorizes grant opportunities by type of applicant; deadline index, which lists grants by their due dates; and functional area index, which classifies federal grant programs into broad categories ranging from agriculture, consumer protection, education, and health, to transportation. Many grant programs are cross-listed under multiple functional areas.

Federal Government Agency Specific Funding Sources

The following table contains a list of federal grantmaking agencies and links to their Web sites. As you clickthrough on these sites, you will usually find information about funding priorities and application procedures. Often you can find information about recently funded projects. When doing so, look for the name and phone number or email address of a contact person.
